Overview

A perfect holiday for enjoying the great Canadian outdoors, canoeing through the Algonquin Provincial Park. You’ll have a couple of nights sleeping under the stars in a tent and a couple of nights at a cosy log cabin.

The Algonquin Log Cabin, sits on the beautiful shores of Surprise Lake, can accommodate up to 12 guests (6 double rooms). Guests will share communal areas such as kitching, dining area and lounge with fireplace, bathroom and access to sauna. Switch off from the modern day world as the cabin has no phone coverage or electricity throughout your stay.

We’ve built this itinerary starting and ending with a night in Toronto, Algonquin Park package and ending in Toronto and car hire built into the price. You may want to explore further in Ontario. We can tailor-make this all to suit you. (JV)

Day 1

Fly to Toronto

On arrival into Toronto, pick up your car hire and head to your hotel. This evening enjoy this cosmopolitan city

Overnight: Chelsea Hotel, Toronto or similar

Day 2

Toronto to Algonquin Provincial Park

Set off from Toronto this morning around 8am and drive out north to the Algonquin Provincial Park to arrive around 12pm for activities to start at 12:30pm. After lunch, the group loads their packs and departs by canoe into the Algonquin Provincial Park, receiving a lesson on paddling along the way. Camp is set on a scenic point cover in Red Pines, followed by a delicious meal cooked by a campfire. Relax under the stars before retiring to your tent (this holiday is based on two people sharing a tent).

Day 3

Hiking and canoeing in Algonquin Park

After breakfast, break camp and paddle east through a series of beautiful lakes. A floating lunch provides the energy to paddle up a bog with great opportunities to see moose, herons and beaver. The final stop is on a beautiful lake with time to hike, swim, fish or simply relax. Enjoy fresh baked bannock bread cooked over the fire and listen to old stories and myths of travelling through the Canadian wilderness.

Day 4

Algonquin Park

Wake up to the smell of coffee brewing and bacon frying for breakfast, then hike through a mixed maple forest, learning about the unique mix of flora and fauna. Discover how to paddle and navigate a canoe solo, stopping along the way for lunch. Reaching the shore late afternoon, you’ll then transfer by truck to the Algonquin Log Cabin. Check into your room to freshen up and then relax over some wine & cheese, followed by dinner in the cabin.

Day 5

Algonquin Park

After breakfast, explore the hiking trails around the Algonquin Log Cabin. A hike to Music Lake features a talk about the boreal forest, the beaver pond and spruce bogs. Enjoy a picnic lunch at Music Lake and then hike to Surprise Lake. Here a 26 foot Voyager Canoe will be moored, and you’ll enjoy a leisurely paddle, island hopping, back to the log cabin. The remainder of the afternoon you are free to relax, swim or take a sauna. A Canadian dinner is followed by a night paddle.

Day 6

Algonquin Park to Toronto

After breakfast take one last excursion, taking a wild edible walk to Lookout Bluff overlooking Algonquin Lakes, working up an appetite for lunch. Afterwards you have some more leisure time until you drive back to Toronto. You’ll arrive back in Toronto about 4.00pm to check-in to your hotel.

Day 7

Toronto

You’ll have the best part of the day to explore Toronto – climb the CN Tower for panoramic views of Lake Ontario, visit the Ice Hockey Hall of Fame or show off your canoeing skills on the lake. Then you can either fly home or extend your Canadian adventure with an extension to Niagara Falls, or take the train to Quebec for further explorations.

Accommodation

  • The first and last night will be at a hotel in Toronto
  • Two nights will be spent in tents at a campsite in a picturesque location in the Algonquin Provincial Park, with simple facilities. Please note there are no "housed" toilets - the facilities whilst camping is a "thunderbox"
  • Two nights will be spent at the Algonquin Log Cabin located on the shores of Surprise Lake in the depths of the Park. This accommodates up to 12 guests in simple comfort with shared washroom facilities, dining area with fireplace, lounge and double occupancy rooms. In a separate building there is a sauna with access to a hot shower. There is no mobile phone coverage or electricity in the cabin.
