Overview

We love this holiday as it includes bucket-list experiences but you can enjoy it at your own pace and don’t have to drive anywhere, plus we’ve included a variety of cruises so that you can also admire the sights from the water. Spend a couple of days in the exciting city of Toronto which is crammed full of things to do and see, such as the Ice Hockey Hall of Fame and the vertigo-inducing CN Tower (we dare you to stand on the glass floor). Then take a scenic harbour cruise, admiring the city skyline and views of Toronto Island parkland and the Gibraltar Point Lighthouse. Take a day trip to Niagara Falls including a cruise to the Falls and time to wander the quaint old town of Niagara-on-the-Lake.

You’ll then catch a train to the charming capital of Ottawa – a lovely contrast to Toronto. Ottawa sits on the south bank of the Ottawa River and has the Rideau Canal running through it, which gives the city a serene character. You can choose from a cruise on either the river or the canal to view the sights. We also recommend visiting at least one of the superb museums such as the Canadian Museum of Nature or the Canadian Museum of History, and strolling Byward Market where you will find an abundance of quirky boutiques, bars and restaurants. You can either fly back from Ottawa, or take the train to Toronto and return from there. (Tailormade)

Highlights

  • Experience the magnificence of Niagara Falls, with a cruise on the Hornblower “Voyage to the Falls”, seeing the Great Gorge, the American Falls, the Bridal Veil Falls and the thundering Horseshoe Falls.
  • Explore Ottawa, sitting on the border of Ontario and Quebec, and either cruise the Rideau Canal or along the Ottawa River to see majestic views of Parliament Hill, Rideau Falls and the Prime Ministers residence.
  • Enjoy time in Toronto, including a cruise on Lake Ontario to admire views of the CN Tower, Rogers Centre and Gibraltar Point Lighthouse.

Day 1

Fly to Toronto

On arrival into Toronto, take the UP Express train (approximately $13) from the airport terminal to Union Street Station, and then the short cab ride to your hotel. We suggest the Chelsea Hotel, but if you upgrade to the Fairmont Royal York then you can simply cross the road to check in!

Toronto hotel: Chelsea Hotel, Toronto or upgrade to Fairmont Royal York

Day 2

Toronto

Explore Toronto, perhaps ascending the CN Tower - we can pre-book tickets for you. We’ve included a cruise of Toronto harbour in this holiday which runs hourly between midday and 4pm. A late afternoon stroll to the Distillery District is our recommendation for you to enjoy a drink in one of the quirky bars, a browse of its independent boutiques, followed by dinner in one of the great restaurants.

Day 3

Day trip to Niagara Falls

You’ll be picked up from your hotel in the morning and transferred to Niagara Falls by coach. Here you will have plenty of time to view the thundering water and get those all-important photos, and then you’ll board a Hornblower Niagara Cruise to get up close to the thundering Horseshoe Falls. Next you’ll enjoy a six course lunch at the Fallsview Restaurant overlooking the Falls. Later in the afternoon you’ll be taken to “Canada’s Prettiest Town” – Niagara on the Lake – where you’ll have free time to explore the lovely boutiques and perhaps try out some of the local wine in one of the many winery tasting rooms (extra charge…but well recommended).

Day 4

Toronto to Ottawa

Return to Union Station to catch your train to Ottawa which takes just over four hours. We’ll booked you into standard class, which has comfy seats and free wifi, but remember to buy your lunch at the station before you depart (there’s plenty of great food stalls to choose from). Or we can upgrade you to business class, where you’ll have complimentary food and beverages. The route takes you along Lake Ontario, past the Thousand Island region, along the St Lawrence River, before heading inland to Ottawa and the station in Tramblay Road. Take the 10 minute taxi ride (not included) to your chosen hotel and enjoy an evening in Downtown Ottawa

Ottawa hotel: Lord Elgin Hotel or upgrade to the landmark hotel the Fairmont Chateau Laurier

Day 5

Ottawa

We’ve included a cruise in this holiday, and you can choose between the Rideau Canal or the Ottawa River, both taking 1.5 hours. Glide along the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in an electric passenger vessel. Or cruise the Ottawa River and enjoy views of Parliament Hill and the Prime Minister’s Residence.

Day 6

Ottawa

Depending how energetic you’re feeling you could take a guided bike ride, a walking tour or perhaps book a hop-on hop-off bus tour. Highlights to see include the Parliament Buildings, the National Gallery of Canada and the combined Canadian Museum of History and War Museum. We can pre-book tickets for you for any of these attractions.

Day 7

Ottawa - Toronto

After breakfast take the train back to Toronto and the airport for your flight home.
