Classic Quebec by Motorhome

11 nights from £1,419 per person Including Flights

Overview

A motorhome holiday is one of the best ways to see Canada, and this suggested itinerary takes you through the beautiful and historic province of Quebec. Beginning in Montreal, you have an easy drive to the charming Mont-Tremblant National Park. Continuing north you will reach the truly massive lake of Saint Jean – essentially an inland sea. Then explore the stunning Saguenay Fjord where you can see Beluga whales and then head back down to the captivating city of Quebec.

You can adapt this suggested route as you wish, perhaps spending more time in the mountains biking and hiking, or perhaps by the lakes swimming and kayaking. You select your own campsites – in high season you’re advised to book these early, but outside of peak times you can usually leave yourself with the flexibility to adapt your itinerary as you go. (CA)

Highlights:

  • Join in activities for all ages at the resort of Mont Tremblant, including rafting, horse riding, golf, sailing and rock climbing
  • Explore La Mauricie Park by Rabaska canoe, 8 metres long with room for 10 people – the traditional mode of transport for the French Canadian fur traders
  • Enjoy the sandy beaches and warm waters of the Lac Saint Jean, so large it is essentially an inland sea
  • Go whale-watching in the Saguenay fjord, where you will be able to spot Beluga whales in their natural habitat
  • Hike the trails of the Jacques-Cartier National Park, through beautiful forests, past picturesque waterfalls and along the stunning lake.

Day 1

Montreal

Arrive in Montreal and check into the airport hotel for a relaxing night before your road trip.

Days 2-3

Montreal – Mont Tremblant (90 miles)

After picking up your motorhome on the outskirts of Montreal, take the easy drive to Mont-Tremblant National Park. A great place to base yourself for the first few days of your Quebec holiday is the Lac Monroe campground. Here you can enjoy a large variety of activities, such as fishing, hiking and the unique Via Ferrata du Diable – a path across a sheer rock face. A great way to explore the park is by canoe – try out Les Meandres du Diable – an easy route for beginners. The nearby pedestrianised resort of Mont-Tremblant has a wealth of activities such as horse riding, rafting, golf, sailing and rock climbing.

Day 4

Mont Tremblant – Mandeville (85 miles)

Enjoy a scenic drive to the beautiful Lanaudiere region, and then enjoy the afternoon relaxing at a lakeside campground

Days 5-6

Mandeville – Riviere Matawin (75 miles)

Drive to the Centre d’Adventure Mattawin where you can base yourself for a couple of days to enjoy this exceptional area. La Maurice National Park is a wonderful place to enjoy the great outdoors, and perhaps take an excursion to Waber Falls, where you can picnic and swim at one of the park’s most beautiful waterfalls after travelling on foot and by canoe.

Day 7

Riviere Matawin – Saint-Henri-de-Taillon (170 miles)

Take a stunning back-country route to one of Quebecs natural wonders – Lac Saint-Jean. So large, this is essentially an inland sea, and here you can explore its warm waters, sandy beaches and stunning coastline from the Point-Taillon National Park. Val-Jalbert is worth a visit – a preserved company town from the 1920’s, as is the wildlife park at Saint-Felicien. You can also cycle the Veloroute des Bleuets – a paved road that encircles Lac Saint-Jean.

Day 8

Saint-Henri-de-Taillon – L’Anse-Saint-Jean (95 miles)

The most southerly fjord in North America, the stunning Saguenay Fjord is characterised by its dramatic rock walks. One of the best views of the fjord can be had from the lovely village of Sainte-Rose-du Nord. You can kayak or cruise along the fjord to spot the white beluga whales who live here.

Day 9

L’Anse-Saint-Jean – Haute-Gorges-de-la-Riviere-Malbaie National Park (105 miles)

Time  to head south, into the Charlevoix region. It’s worth spending at least a day exploring the Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Riviere-Malbaie National Park, perhaps hiking the majestic Acropole des Draveurs or choosing one of the bike trails.

Day 10

Haute-Gorges-de-la-Riviere-Malbaie – Jacques-Cartier National Park (150 miles)

You could stop in Baie-Saint-Paul for lunch to visit one of the many local art galleries, but don’t delay too long your arrival in the spectacular Jacques-Cartier National Park. Stay here for at least one night, but if possible more, so that you can kayak the incredible Valle de la Jacques-Cartier and walk the beautiful trails.

Day 11

Jacques-Cartier National Park – Montreal (215 miles)

Time to head home, but if possible do make the short detour to the charming city of Quebec. Gallic charm meets historic buildings, and European cuisine mingles with unusual boutiques. There are campsites just outside the city, so if possible do stay for a night to give you time to soak up the atmosphere.
